More Rain Expected For Essex

Communities are being warned of more torrential rain and flooding after thunderstorms caused floods, and disrupted travel across Essex.

There was major disruption to the rail network across Essex, with many routes blocked by standing water.

Drivers endured long delays on the A12 near Margaretting after two lanes were closed due to flooding whilst the A13 was closed all day because of flooding in an underpass near Barking.

Several polling stations in the region had to be relocated, or were difficult to access because of flooding.

An amber weather warning for rain has been issued by the Met Office for Essex and Thurrock on Thursday afternoon and evening, while a yellow warning covering the South East is in place until Friday.

A driving instructor, who made his pupil swap places with him, had to push his vehicle (pictured) after he became stuck in a flooded road in Writtle near Chelmsford.

Doug Wilson, Environment Agency flood risk manager, said: "Torrential downpours across the South East, including London, could lead to further surface water flooding and significant disruption to travel on Thursday."

He added: "If travelling, we urge people not to drive through flood water - it is often deeper than it looks and just 30cm (1ft) of flowing water is enough to float your car."

The Environment Agency has issued seven flood warnings covering rivers in Essex, and around 40 flood alerts across the South East.

A number of rivers in the region have hit their highest level on record over the past 24 hours.

These include the River Rom and the River Ingrebourne near Rainham.

There continues to be a risk of flooding from smaller, fast-responding rivers in built-up areas, the Environment Agency said.

The swollen river conditions come after heavy downpours and thunderstorms, which saw a number of places in Essex record more than 30mm (1.2 inches) overnight.

There have been no reports of serious injuries.
